Kristen- Thank you for sharing this. One particular depiction really stood out for me this week: "After graduating in Art Education, I taught Earth Science to uninterested middle school kids: sedimentary rock, plate tectonics, metamorphic rock, striated history remnants of excavatable proof of civilizations: shards, ochred walls, bones in a huddled mass of circled arms." Uninterested might be the key word here. And the key question, that is probably more universal than most people would've liked, is: "What should one do to help those in need, but not in want?" This is the role of teachers (and writers) of today. It's a big responsibility. But worthy, nonetheless. Your writing is a great reminder of this. :)
