Article voiceover
note: I have edited a bit since this initial recording.
I.
I only know the hill
its thick green
points push the curve
of my foot on earth.
A rootless foreigner,
othered by the bed
of logs, beak holed
worm holed, warmed
by loyalists of lichen.
I want to see the slow work
its business, unadvertised.
Watch a cow flick dumb flies,
hear its pink square mouth
tear the tender grass.
I’m an outsider, unschooled.
I only know the hill as a rounded
thing, thick with little bones.
II.
Dear Earth little hill made round
wound round with spinning.
I wish it was enough
our Power,
of Positive Thinking
located in our prefrontal cortex
directly behind the eyes.
Able to see.
III.
Dear Earth,
thank you for your generosity
for a long time, it appeared endless
in this place of our becoming
adept at altering
everything.
And Dear Earth,
Abaci are still used.
Somewhere in a small village
someone is sliding
smooth wood beads to the addition or
subtraction side, just like me, you say,
and scales adjusted
through balance.
Earth Day Earth Day Earth Day Earth Day, Every Day
Earth Day.
Giving is always optional a click away with a sincere thank you either way :)
“... to see the slow work / it’s business” is an inspired line break and to follow it with the “advertised”/“flies” rhyme is just fantastic.
I love this Kristen except for the long line mentioning The Power of Positive Thinking. I think the line is too long and the book is too dated. BUT it’s a wonderful poem!
